1. The tower was never built to be there forever, it was only meant to be a temporary display for the 1889 World Fair in Paris. Architect, Gustave Eiffel, added a radio antenna π‘ and wireless telegraph transmitter in the Tower and the French government then decided that the Tower was too useful to be demolished. The Eiffel Tower is used to broadcast radio and television programs around the world, still today.
2. The Eiffel Towerβs metal contracts in the winter π§οΈ and expands in the summer enabling the Tower to change in size throughout the year. The Eiffel Towerβs height can change by up to 15 cm!
3. The sun causes the tower to tilt away from it. As the sun only hits one out of the four sides, the Eiffel Tower tends to lean. On a sunny π day, the top of the tower can move in a circle 15 centimetres in diameter!
4. At the top of the tower, Architect Gustave Eiffel built a private apartment where he could work on experiments and entertain visitors π₯
5. The Tower was built using puddle iron and has been given coats of paint π¨ to protect it from oxidation. To make sure it stays maintained, the Tower is repainted every seven years. The painting is done by hand, still today, after stripping, cleaning, and rust-proofing.
